We have defined South coast, the long stretch from Galle to Hambantota, this stretch offers a greater diversity of beaches than the west coast. The Hikkaduwa attracts budget and independent travelers, and generally a younger crowd. The main road has many restaurants, beach bars, and beachside nightclubs similar to Goa or Bali.
Kosgoda Turtle Hatchery plays a protective role for the turtles that lay their eggs on the beach annually, and is well worth a visit.






Best period to Travel
The south coast’s peak holiday season is from late November to April. During this period the weather is at its best with calm blue sea. December and April are also the best months for seeing whales and dolphins in Mirissa. Sri Lanka is affected by two monsoons. October to mid-December can see heavy rain brought in by the north-east monsoon, with the south-west monsoon bringing heaviest downpours from mid-April to mid-June east. In a nut shell South west season is from end November to April.
Activities and sights
Mirissa could be considered the best beach, un spoilt which is popular for snorkeling, scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, sailing and sea-kayaking and other water sports. During the migration season in December and April, large groups of Dolphins and Blue Whales can be seen just a few miles offshore from Mirissa. Mirissa whale watching excursion starts at early morning 6 am and may take up to 4-5 hours where you have your breakfast on board.
Ahangama, Midigama and Weligama, also beaches are best for the surfers. Close to Matara Polhena, and Dickwella also feature gorgeous beaches that remains relatively unknown.
